1. Why are my services billed in advance?

Unlike utility services, these services are by subscription and have no meter to measure usage. For Diamondnet all of our services, with the exception of long distance phone calls and pay-per-view movies and events, are billed in advance.

1. What is DiamondNet?

DiamondNet is the new fiber optic communications system that the City of Sallisaw and the Sallisaw Municipal Authority launched in February of 2005. This system brings advanced video, Internet, and telephone services to the residents and businesses of Sallisaw.

2. What is a Fiber-to-the-Home System?

A Fiber to the Home system (FTTH) is an advanced telecommunications technology that utilizes 100% fiber optics throughout the entire system. Unlike traditional cable or telephone systems that use copper wire or a mixture of coax and fiber optics, the FTTH system is more reliable, provides virtually unlimited bandwidth and requires less maintenance once it is constructed.

3. Who owns the DiamondNet system?

The community of Sallisaw owns the FTTH system and its employees are residents of the community.. In the past, the cable television provider in the community experienced numerous ownership and name changes, averaging about one every four years. DiamondNet will have one name and one owner for the life of the system. As your neighbors, we strive to provide you with excellent service. When you need help, just pick up the phone or come see us on the main floor at City Hall on Choctaw Street. We are here to serve you.

4. Is Sallisaw the first city in the United States to operate a fiber telecommunications system like this?

No. In the last several years many cities throughout the United States, some larger and some smaller than Sallisaw, have either constructed a hybrid fiber coax system (HFC) or a fiber to the home system (FTTH). The Fiber to the Home Council reports that over 128 communities have deployed FTTH services with active customers. These communities have had excellent success with their systems, most even exceeding their initial service penetration estimates.

5. What can we do with a fiber optic system?

The fiber optic system will allow the Sallisaw Municipal Authority to offer state of the art television, Internet and telephone services to the community. Services will be more reliable, faster, and clearer. More importantly, since the community will own the system, DiamondNet will have a community flavor. Overall the FTTH system will improve the quality of life in this community and provide a strong economic development tool by attracting new business and enhancing the competitiveness of our current business community.

1. What is a virus?

A computer virus is a software program that attaches itself to other software programs on your computer. It can damage data files, display offending messages, cause your computer to crash, and also can overtake your email software and begin to send out vast amounts of email messages to your email contacts. Most viruses are obtained from either downloading files from the internet, opening attachments in email messages, or from visiting websites on the World Wide Web.

2. How do I know a virus or spyware has infected my computer?

• Your computer runs more slowly than normal or stops responding and locks up often.
• Your computer restarts on its own time after time.
• You see unusual error messages or strange pop-up screens, usually advertisements.
• Your home page setting has been changed and takes you to advertising sites.
• You notice a new tool bar that you did not load and have difficulty in removing.

If you suspect you have a virus or spyware and you do not have the expertise to clean the malicious software from your computer, have a reputable computer repair technician inspect and clean your computer. An infected computer can cause harm not only to your computer, but the network of DiamondNet as well.

3. How do I avoid being infected with viruses and spyware?

• Install virus and spyware protection software on your computer. Use software from a trustworthy source such as Symantec or McAfee.
• Keep your virus and spyware software current. Most providers of this software offer daily updates for their software and their programs will update themselves automatically if connected to the internet.
• Do not open strange emails with attachments.
• Scan all files downloaded from the internet. Most software will allow you to set settings that will do this automatically.
• Use an internet firewall. Windows XP with Service Pack 2 comes with a firewall setting.
